Roots and Wings Forest School

Leona Cichy of Roots and Wings Forest School in New York Mills, Minnesota is implementing a hands-on approach to teaching kids about food systems, growing foods, trying new foods, the importance of local foods, and the importance of pollinators in food production. They planted a veggie garden that the children in her care tend and grow. Their harvest is incorporated into the school’s snack menu. Students set up a food stand during pick-up time to sell goods to their parents.

“Teaching kids about where their food comes from is so important! Understanding the farm-to-table process allows them to have a greater appreciation for the foods we eat, the farmers that grow them, and the process it takes to get our food to our bellies.”
